Fritillaria meleagris

Fritillaria meleagris
F. meleagris: Syn: Guinea Hen Flowers, Snake’s Head Fritillary, the Checkered Lily.
Circa 1575, this prized naturalizer has small, bell-shaped, checkered flowers in maroon-purple and white. It prefers a sheltered spot in the garden with light shade and somewhat cool, moist soil. Also good for forcing. Bulb size: 6 cm/up. April/May. 8". HZ: 3-8.

There is almost a row of these on the second step of the tiered garden. They would look very nice with early daffs behind them.
